What Is the /g/ Sound? (Voiced Velar Stop)

/g/ is a voiced velar stop. You make it by raising the back of the tongue (the dorsum) to the soft palate (the velum) to briefly stop the airflow, while the tongue tip stays down and relaxed, and the voice is switched on. Its partner is /k/ — the voiceless velar cognate — made with the exact same tongue placement but no voicing.

Velar Fronting: Why Kids Say “Doat” for “Goat”

Velar fronting is the phonological process where back (velar) sounds /k/ and /g/ are replaced by front (alveolar) sounds /t/ and /d/. So goat becomes “doat,” gate becomes “date,” and cat becomes “tat.” It shows up because the back-of-the-tongue gesture is harder to control than the tongue-tip gesture kids already use for /t/ and /d/, so the tip stands in for the dorsum.

For most children, this is a typical, age-appropriate pattern — not an atypical one. If your child is two or three and fronting, that alone is not a red flag.

A predictable set of sounds substituted in a predictable way points to a process goal; one distorted sound with no pattern points to an articulation goal. Some children need both. This is exactly the call an error-pattern analysis helps you make.

When to Worry: Typical Fronting vs the Red-Flag “Gog” Pattern

For a young child, velar fronting through roughly 3;6–4;0 is developmentally normal. If your two- or three-year-old says “doat” for goat, that is usually just speech catching up to itself.

How to Teach the /g/ Sound: Elicitation & Placement

The placement target never changes: back of the tongue up to the soft palate, tongue tip down and relaxed, voice on. (/g/ is identical to /k/ except that the voice is turned on — a useful contrast to lean on.)
