CH — the /tʃ/ phoneme — is a voiceless palatal affricate. It is made at the palate, with no voicing, and it sits at developmental order 18 of the 24 English consonants: a later-developing sound, but not one of the very last.

The phonetic insight most guides skip is what “affricate” means. An affricate is a stop plus a fricative fused into one sound. CH = /t/ + /sh/: a quick tongue-tip stop that builds air pressure, then releases into a /sh/ burst. When Should a Child Say the CH Sound?

Ages use the standard speech-pathology years;months format, not decimals. 3;6 means 3 years, 6 months old — not 3.6 years. 5;0 means 5 years, 0 months (typically the start of kindergarten).

The window from 3;6 to 5;0 is the normal “emerging” band: CH errors here are developmentally typical, not yet a flag. Past 5;0, a child who is still substituting or distorting CH with an intelligibility impact is typically a reasonable target. Two caveats keep this honest, as in any norms-based decision: being under age does not rule out an IEP (a highly unintelligible 4-year-old may still need service), and being over age does not mandate one (a fully intelligible 6-year-old with a mild residual error may not meet eligibility).

The Two Main CH Error Patterns: Deaffrication vs Stopping

Deaffrication replaces the affricate with a fricative — ship for chip, share for chair, wash for watch. The child drops the stop portion (the tongue-tip closure and burst), leaving only the /sh/. This is a normal phonological process typically suppressed by about age 4 (Bowen 2015); persistence past ~4;6 warrants therapy. A second deaffrication variant is ch→s (sip for chip), which drops the same stop but lands on /s/ rather than /sh/.

Stopping replaces the affricate with a stop — tip for chip, top for chop. The child drops the fricative portion (the /sh/ release), leaving only the /t/. Because /t/ is already mastered by 4;0, the child is simply defaulting to a stop they own. The 3;0 figure many charts cite is for stopping of /f/ and /v/ — it does not apply to an affricate like CH. Stopping of the later palatal sounds (/ʃ/, /ʧ/, /ʤ/) is typically suppressed by about 4;6, with clinical concern only if it persists past ~5;6 — so a persistent ch→t, especially one lingering past the 5;0 CH mastery age, is a clear target.

One quick disambiguation so you do not confuse patterns: palatal fronting (ch→ts, sh→s) is a related but distinct process, also suppressed by about 4;0. It is worth naming, but it is not this article’s focus.

How to Teach the CH Sound: A Shaping Ladder

Most guides give you one elicitation trick. Because CH is a fused stop-plus-fricative, you actually have a ladder of techniques, and the right rung depends on which half of the sound the child is dropping. Probe first, pick the technique that matches the error, then collapse and generalize.

Technique E — Probe stimulability first

Before choosing anything, find out whether CH is already emerging. It often surfaces through coarticulation in “t + you” phrases — say bet you, got you, meet you at a natural pace and listen for the /tʃ/ that appears at the word boundary (“betcha,” “gotcha”). If the child produces that CH, you have a stimulable sound to build from — a 30-second check that saves a session of guessing.

Technique A — Shape CH from /t/ (best for stopping)

A child who stops CH already owns the /t/; they are just dropping the fricative release. Start from a long /t/, freeze the tongue tip against the alveolar ridge, round the lips, and say shop — then slide the frozen /t/ into it to produce chop. Technique B — Shape CH from a held /sh/ (best for deaffrication)

A child who deaffricates already owns the /sh/; they are dropping the stop. Have them hold a long /sh/, then add a quick tongue-tip closure at the ridge to interrupt the airstream into a burst. The interruption is the missing stop — the moment the /sh/ is stopped and released, it becomes CH.

Technique C — The t + sh blend

Teach CH explicitly as two familiar sounds said fast: /t/ + /sh/. Have the child produce them slowly and separately, then speed them up until they fuse. Slowing down first makes the two components conscious; speeding up automates the blend.

Technique D — The burst / airflow cue

Anchor the sound with a verbal cue — “Tongue up, lips round, burst of air!” — and a tactile analogy. The sneeze (“A-CHOO!”) is a memorable anchor for parents; a spray-bottle or “burst” demo makes the puff of air visible, especially for the CH-vs-SH contrast (a Peachie Speechie-style cue).

The split matters because a child can be stable initially and still collapse in the medial position, where CH sits between two vowels.

Which template you pick depends on the error — and there is an important distinction here.
